All My Friends Are Anti-Fascist
“Antifa,” short for Anti-fascist, is not an organization, it’s not a political party, it’s not a militia—it’s an idea, a perspective. To be “Antifa” is simply to be AGAINST fascism. Fascism is a threat to humanity and a threat to all life on this planet. Anti-fascism is a global struggle of the marginalized, the poor, the working class. Anti-fascism is the will of the people to organize in community, to act, to grow, to build, and to defend and protect one another. Being actively anti-fascist is to show up for your community in ways that you can, when you can, in ways that are needed, when they are needed. Being anti-fascist is asking for help and support from your community when you need it. To be anti-fascist is to be curious, to learn history, to try to understand how and why the world is the way it is today, and actively work in community to plant the seeds for a new and better world. Being anti-fascist is mutual aid, being anti-fascist is community defense, it is art, it is music and it is food shared in community.
These last few weeks have been weighing on me pretty heavy. We will never back down, but it is not 100% clear exactly what lies ahead. Whatever is, it’s not looking good. As I’m typing this,
I’m at home sick with Covid, my friend @greg.j.stoker is sailing to Gaza with the @sumud flotilla, and our comrades here in Chicago are on the frontlines protecting our communities against masked fascist kidnappers from the federal government. We’ve been out on the streets in Chicago, and we’ve seen some of y’all out there, and I have to say, all of the messages, emails and comments in support and solidarity really mean a lot. WE ARE EVERYWHERE! I can’t say I’m not scared or worried about the “Antifa” executive order—I am. But then I think about the Palestinian people showing us all how to remain steadfast in the face of a genocide, in the face of fascism/zionism. I think of all our trans siblings who the US federal government is currently trying to erase from public life yet still are the most joyful, creative and brave badass folks. When I start to feel despair, I think about Haymarket, Fred Hampton, I think about my friend Ty and all of the disabled people who not only survive but thrive in a world that would prefer us to not exist. Our Existence is the Revolution. It’s a spit in the eye of every fascist bootlicker, and it is beautiful. The anarchist and anti-fascist principles for mutual aid, reciprocity and community defense are essential pacts for a disabled person to have any kind of quality of life under capitalism. We are going to need to scale these practices in ways that may seem impossible, but our current reality seemed impossible to a lot of people reading this not that long ago. If you’re not sure what to do, learn from @marcia Howard and the folks at George Floyd Square, read Braiding Sweetgrass, read Anarchism and The Black Revolution by Lorenzo Komba Ervin, keep learning, keep fighting and keep the fire burning!
